Canon is replacing the XL H1 HDV camcorder it introduced in 2005 with two new models, the XL H1S and the XL H1A. With a similar look and feel to the camcorder they are replacing, the new units ship with an improved lens and refined image control.
The new camcorders will record on mini-DV, and are compatible with Focus Enhancements FireStore hard disk drives. The XL H1A should appeal to single-camera videographers, while the XL H1S is designed for multicamera work due to its inclusion of HD-SDI out, genlock and SMPTE time code.
The new camcorders will sport the same, three 1/3-inch native 16:9 CCD imagers as the previous model (1440x1080), with native 1080/60i capture. But there are new refinements for improved image control and camera operations, such as an increased range of color adjustments, customized menus, and the ability to change the responsiveness of the zoom and focus. Other features include improved video gain control and color correction, extended white balance, and selective noise reduction.
Canon’s fixed lens XH A1 and XH G1 HDV camcorders, which were introduced in 2006, will remain part of the company’s HDV line. The XL H1S and XL H1A are expected to ship this summer.
