Radio news reporters had a chance to see and hear what network journalists use for field reporting Tuesday morning at RTNDA@NAB. Randy Bell, news director at WMSI(FM), Jackson, Miss., moderated “Go Ahead, You Can Touch It,” a panel discussion about recording, processing and transmitting news reports using IP codecs, satellite phones, wireless air cards and Bluetooth on cell phones, as well as the next generation of audio recorders from one-piece standalone recorders to removable media and MiniDisc.
ABC News Radio correspondent Alex Stone, CBS News Radio correspondent Donna Francavilla and CNN Radio Senior Producer Tyler Moody shared real-world experiences about the hardware and software that did and didn’t work, along with tips about using new technologies efficiently and effectively.
Paul Foschino from Sony’s Broadcast and Professional division and John Owens from Nagra demonstrated their company’s digital recorders.
During his presentation, Moody suggested that for radio field reporting a recorder needs to be “easy to use, small and durable.” Adding to his list of musts were record, edit and playback capabilities; USB or SD card connection; long battery life; and an external speaker. It also should be “inexpensive and lightweight.”
