ARRI Continues Parallel Development

Wide Range of Lens Choices for Film, Video Markets

Allowing that there are separate advantages to both mediums, ARRI comes to the NAB Show with product announcements for both the film and video markets.

“Film and digital technologies will co-exist, and we will continue our developments for both,” said Mark Shipman-Mueller, ARRI product manager for film cameras and lenses.

ARRI upgraded its D-20 single-chip Super 35-sized sensor digital camera, resulting in the D-21. With improvements to the image processing engine, improved image quality, simpler operation and new accessories, the D-21 features new output options, including a 2K raw data output mode and the use of anamorphic lenses. Color Management lookup tables for 100, 200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640 and 800 ASA are now available, too.

The new ARRIRAW format contains the D-21’s raw sensor information and can be used up to 30 fps. It can be transported via a HD-SDI link, embedded in the standard RGBA 4:4:4:4 transport protocol. Close cooperation with manufacturers of data recorders ensures a method of recording and previewing the ARRIRAW format. ARRI software tools currently in beta test can process ARRIRAW files and output either an HD image or a 2K data file.

The company is also offering a shoulder-set S-5 and new ground glasses for the 1.33, 1.78, 1.85 and 2.39 formats. All D-21 cameras will come equipped with the FEM-2 addition, which provides a built-in radio for wireless lens and camera control. The FEM-2 also contains motor drive electronics, so the ARRI Controlled Lens Motors can be plugged directly into the camera.

The True Blue lighting product range includes a selection of innovative lampheads with improvements for studio and location lighting, such as reduced weight, compact size and maximized light output.

One particular focus of enhancements to the lampheads has been their adaptability to accessories. The tilt lock has been improved by a stainless-steel friction disk that locks tight to eliminate the danger of forward tilting when heavy, front-mounted accessories are in use. In addition, a new stirrup center adjustment allows the lamphead to slide until its center of gravity is either at or near the tilt lock, depending on the accessories attached.

Also announced was ARRI’s WRC-2 wireless camera control, which is compatible with all new-generation ARRIFLEX and ARRICAM cameras. The WRC-2 combines the functions of previous units, such as the RCU-1 and WRC-1, with a number of new features.

The WRC-2 automatically adapts to the camera it is being used with, while the touchscreen interface makes remote control faster and easier. As its functionality is software-based, the WRC-2 may be updated with new features and capabilities.
