To accommodate viewers who remain attached to their 4:3 television sets after the digital TV switchover next February, a coalition of broadcasters — NBC Universal, Hearst-Argyle Television and Tribune Broadcasting Co. — have announced the “AFD Ready” Initiative.
The initiative is designed to seamlessly adjust HDTV’s 16:9 widescreen ratio to the traditional 4:3.
“We are fully committed to providing the best possible television experience for all our viewers,” said Ian Trombley, executive vice president of media distribution services at NBC Universal.
“We want to work with our cable and satellite partners to ensure that SD legacy customers have the best possible viewing experience after the DTV transition,” said Ira Goldstone, vice president and chief technology officer at Tribune. “Without an AFD standard, broadcasters are forced to choose between downconversion formats that compromise on graphics placement and shot composition or that result in undesirable black bars within their display.”
More than 20 broadcast equipment manufacturers, including Miranda, Sencore and Tandberg, have announced their support for the initiative.
