Expansion of Current Applications and Entry Into New Markets Announced

TV TECHNOLOGY

Harris Broadcast Communications is reinforcing the notion this NAB Show that it is a company well-prepared to meet the industry’s most complex technology needs as the business moves fully digital with new workflow needs.

To this end, Harris is showcasing new products, technology partnerships and interoperability initiatives designed to ease the transition to DTV, smooth the process of broadcasting for multiple platforms and propel the industry into the new stage of mobile broadcasting.

Most significantly, Harris hopes to meet the needs of the broadcast industry by broadening its so-called ONE philosophy: a multipronged approach designed to offer integrated technologies and interoperable workflows that run through five different product areas: production workflow solutions, media workflow solutions, channel playout solutions, multiplatform delivery solutions, digital signage solutions and

3 Gbps solutions designed to help broadcasters migrate to the 1080p HD format.

“We offer capabilities that are unique in the industry,” said Brian Cabeceiras, vice president of marketing and technology for Harris Broadcast. “These workflow capabilities promise to take you from start to finish.”

END-TO-END

To ensure such promises, the company completed development of the Harris Interoperability Lab in Toronto, a $2.5 million equipment testing facility that is designed to “ensure every piece of Harris equipment is interoperable … and ensure interoperability with third party products,” Cabeceiras said.

Here at the NAB Show, the company is showcasing 64 new products in five of those key workflow product areas, including the U.S. debut of the NEXIO AMP advanced media platform with 3 Gbps capability; new Velocity ESX, XNG and PRX editors; upgrades to the Videotek QuiC and VTM and TVM test and measurement products; and a suite of new audio solutions.

The company will also put a renewed focus on broadcast news and sports solutions by showing the Harris NewsForce HD/SD newsroom product family and Harris Inscriber G7 graphics system. In addition, Harris is showing its multiplatform delivery solutions, including the Harris NetVX video networking platform, new Videotek DDM-6800+ demodulator modules and the DMB 670-4000 transmitter for support of DMB mobile TV and DAB digital radio programming.

MOBILE TELEVISION

Harris is firmly planting itself at the forefront of one key topic at this year’s convention: the emergence of mobile television. The company is working alongside LG Electronics to demonstrate the capabilities of a newly developed IP-based content delivery platform for their jointly developed MPH (mobile pedestrian handheld) in-band mobile DTV system. The system is being put through the paces here, as signals are being broadcast over several local Las Vegas stations to Harris’ booth in the convention center.

In the last year, the company has continued its trend of technology and company acquisitions with the purchase of DESKTOPBOX, an Internet broadcasting technology firm whose technology enables synchronization between a television or radio broadcast and Internet broadcast. The company has also joined with the entertainment services firm Building B to provide broadband content via an on-demand video entertainment platform for broadcasters.

All of these initiatives — and the ongoing transition to digital television — have worked to transform Harris over the last few years, said Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communications. The company has also seen significant growth over the last several years, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, he said.
